The popular convenience store chain held a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday.

The first Wawa in Florida opened in Orlando back in 2012. Since then, more than 300 different locations have been built around the state.

Now, Tallahassee is getting its first wave of Wawa fuel stations, starting with one located at 1495 Capital Circle Northwest.

Local government officials attended Wednesday's ribbon cutting ceremony, including Leon County Commissioner Christian Caban.

“Wawa investing in our community represents growth," Caban said. "We heard the amount of jobs and economic impact for a community that really needs it."

Jessica Sewell is a frequent Wawa customer. She said she stops at the stores on the way to Orlando and Gainesville, but always felt Tallahassee was missing out.

She stopped in on opening day to get a Sizzli breakfast sandwich for her daughter.

“This is the sweetest group of people opening a store I’ve ever seen. I got hugged on the way in," said Sewell.

Wawa plans to build five more fuel stations around Tallahassee over the next 5-8 years.

Additional stores are anticipated for:

  • Blair Stone and Miccosukee roads.
  • Capital Circle Southeast and St. Augustine Road.
  • Thomasville and Maclay roads.
  • Capital Circle Southwest and Woodville Highway.

To build each store, Wawa will invest more than $7.5 million. Officials said each store will mean more for the community including 140 local jobs during the construction period.
