Six Monticello residents have been selected to serve on the jury.

A Jefferson County judge on Tuesday heard opening statements from attorneys in Kirk Reams’ criminal trial.

Reams, the former Jefferson County Clerk was arrested after the Florida Department of Law Enforcement launched an investigation that found he and two other officials were running a kickback scheme.

The three reportedly stole more than $800,000 from the county to fund non-office related trips and personal expenditures.

The former clerk faces charges of grand theft and fraud. Warren 'Charles' Culp Jr., who was a financial consultant to the Clerk of Court, and Justin 'Tyler' McNeill, a former Deputy Clerk of Courts, are also facing charges in connection to the incident.

Culp has already entered a plea and is expected to testify against Reams. McNeill is still awaiting trial.

The trial is expected to last a week and possibly extend into early next week.
