The old Northwood Centre will be bulldozed to make way for a new police department headquarters.

The old Northwood Centre is being bulldozed starting today, and the location between North Monroe Street and Tharpe Street is being readied for redevelopment.

The space once housed Tallahassee’s first indoor mall. More recently, it was used by state workers who abandoned the offices due to the discovery of large amounts of bat guano and other environmental hazards.

Two years ago, the City of Tallahassee purchased the roughly 29.5-acre parcel for $6.8 million. It will eventually be home to the Tallahassee Police Department, which has outgrown its headquarters on Seventh Avenue in midtown.

The site is also expected to house community amenities and other economic development projects. City commissioners say they will continue to seek input from residents.
