The city of Tallahassee is moving forward with plans for a new police headquarters. During a meeting Wednesday city commissioners got an update on 10 potential locations for the new space.

Tallahassee residents suggested more than 68 potential locations for TPD's new homebase. City Manager Reese Goad said his staff has whittled that list down to 10 using a matrix that includes criteria such as size, proximity to potential hazards, proximity to other city facilities and impact on redevelopment. Some of the sites on the consideration list include The Northwood Center, Governors Square Mall, and staying in the current TPD location.

Assistant City Manager Wayne Tedder said the next step is to start learning more about each space.

“The first thing we’ll do is reach out to the property owners of each of those sites," Tedder said.

Next he said officials will start reaching out to businesses, renters and home owners in the area. Tedder said the goal is to create a process focused heavily on community dialogue. The plan is to use that input to narrow the list further to three sites by next fall.

From that point we will do a very deep dive in those communities," Tedder said. "Again going back and doing a notice to people within 1,500 feet of the site. We will have our architectural and construction management team develop concepts based on what we’re hearing from the citizens as well as additional components that may be considered as part of the site.”

Construction on the project is slated to begin by 2023.
