Capital Report: 06-20-2014

Under Florida law, city and county officials face penalties for violating the state’s prohibition on local gun ordinances. As Jessica Palombo reports, after that provision was enacted three years ago, gun rights advocates have filed several lawsuits against local governments and individual commissioners—including in Florida’s capital city.

Today at noon was the deadline for Florida candidates to get their name on the ballot.  Business has been brisk at the Secretary of State’s office in Tallahassee and also at the various county supervisor of elections offices all over Florida.  Hopefuls are now turning their sights to their party’s primary.  But as Nick Evans reports, some lesser known competitors are just hoping they can get into a debate with the other candidates.

Florida’s new jobless numbers came out this (Friday) morning.  May’s unemployment rate was just a fraction above April’s.  But, as Caitie Switalski reports, the latest figures are not good news for a governor whose re-election bid is very much dependent on steady improvement in the state’s jobs picture.

Governor Rick Scott has signed close to 70 bills into law this week—most of them today. As Sascha Cordner reports, they include a slew of gun-related measures, a controversial voucher expansion bill, and a bill dealing with medical marijuana.

The Florida State University Presidential Search Committee is taking steps to refine its search process. As Margaret Tobin reports, the committee held its first meeting Friday with new search firm Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates.

And Regan McCarthy reports state officials have just approved the sale of several properties that’ll net about 18-million dollars to put toward environmentally sensitive land purchases.
