Tallahassee's StarMetro bus system is gearing up for a new upgraded transit center.
To celebrate, the City held a ceremonial event Wednesday on the site of the future Southside Transit Center (STC) , located on the corner of Orange Avenue and Meridian Street.
"The Southside Transit Center will be the first public transit center built in Tallahassee since C.K. Steele Plaza in the 1980s," Director of StarMetro Angela Baldwin said. "This new state of the art facility will be transformative not only for our transportation network, but for this area."
The new development will go on the city’s Southside and feature a fleet of all-electric city buses.
Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor said the project will help residents secure reliable and eco-friendly transportation.
“It gives people a chance to get jobs, to be able to go to jobs and be a part of the economy," Proctor told WFSU. "That's a part of our community’s problem, we don’t have transportation. It’s going to bring people who otherwise would come into our area into our area.”
Construction of the transit center began this week. The STC will be a multi-bay, two-story facility with eight covered bays with electric charging stations for fixed route buses.
The $20 million project is funded through a federal grant, which the city used to jumpstart the gas-to-electric initiative.
Once complete, the Southside bus station will be the first public transit center to be built in Tallahassee in over four decades. Learn more about the project at https://bit.ly/49UuLgN
