Dozens of sail boats of all shapes and sizes will be racing off Wakulla County's Shell Point Beach this weekend, April 26-28. It's the start of the second half-century for the Stephen C. Smith Regatta.
Smith, an avid sailor, succumbed to a rare form of Leukemia before he was 30. Family and friends began a memorial sail boat regatta in his honor. Since then, event organizer Andrea Schwendinger Bennett said a very impressive amount of money has been raised for the American Cancer Society.
"It is definitely WAY over $500,000-$600,000 through the 51 years we've been doing this."
The main attraction, she said, is all the exciting boat races.
"Windsurfing, Hobie Cats, Sunfish, WETA (trimarans) and PHRF (larger) boats. There's a wide variety and there's even something for those who don't go sailing."
Including lots of beach activities, food and other attractions.
