It's watermelon time in Monticello

The festival's signature parade takes place on Saturday.
Monticello Watermelon Festival
The festival's signature parade takes place on Saturday.

The final weekend of the 74th Annual Jefferson County Watermelon Festival is coming up. Event co-director Katie Truelove says it all kicks off this Friday afternoon.

"We're going to have our Watermelon Jam, which we used to call our street dance. We'll have the Highway 59 Band with live music in the middle of our big festival field. All of that fun starts at 7 and the festival itself is open from 3 until 9 on Friday."

The festival reaches its climax the following day.

"On Saturday, the festival opens at 9. We have our Watermelon Parade at 10 a.m. and then the festival will be open all day until 3 p.m."

Along with all the old-fashioned, small-town vibes, Truelove says there will be some more modern diversions as well. One of them is a virtual reality play space and other up-to-date amusements.
