Services from parenting help to mental health support to a computer lab are now available in the Fort Braden community. It’s all part of a new Family Resource Center that officially opened Saturday.

The center’s goal is to help strengthen families and build healthier communities. And Leon County Commissioner Christian Caban says it’s something he’s excited to have in his rural district.

“You know, that is a very rural community," he says, "roughly 18 miles from town, and with that distance comes lack of access to certain necessities and certain services -- such as mental health services, food insecurities -- and so, we’re just really excited about what this program is going to offer for our neighbors.”

Caban said neighbors helped conduct a survey to identify local needs.

“And with that feedback, it showed that hey, there were some big issues here, whether it’s transportation issues, lack of services, lack of access to services," he says. "And so, this is going to be a big step in the right direction for our neighbors in Fort Braden.”

The Fort Braden Family Resource Center is a collaboration by the Children’s Services Council of Leon County, the Children’s Home Society of Florida, and the Leon County Government.
