Tallahassee schools announce delayed opening Wednesday because of expected weather

Concern about severe weather expected in the early hours Wednesday morning that could bring downed trees and road closures has caused some Tallahassee schools, including Florida State University and Leon County Schools, to announce plans to open later on Wednesday.

In a statement the university says "Due to anticipated severe weather including strong winds up to 60 mph, Florida State University’s Tallahassee campus will delay opening until 9 a.m. ET Wednesday, March 5, 2025. The university expects to resume classes and normal business operations at 9 a.m."

Florida State University Schools will open 30 minutes after the regular start time. Classes are delayed Wednesday until 8:30 a.m. Dismissal and after school activities will continue as normal

Leon County schools are operating on a one hour delay. In a message posted on social media, officials say schools will open at the following times:

-High schools will start at 8:30 a.m.
-Elementary schools will start at 9:30 a.m.
-Middle schools will start at 10:30 a.m.
-Bus routes will begin one hour later than normal
-EDEP before school programs will start one hour later than normal
-ALL DISTRICT STAFF should arrive to begin work one hour later than normal.
-There are no changes to dismissal times or afterschool activities.
