County officials say Lawson deserves to be honored for his contributions to the community.

Former Florida congressman Alfred J. Lawson Jr. will soon have a Gadsden County building named after him.

County Commissioners announced Monday they plan to rename the Gadsden County Co-operative Extension Service facility to the Alfred J. Lawson Jr. Building on Wednesday, June 19, in Quincy.

In February 2022, the Gadsden County Board of County Commissioners voted in favor of the name change.

Lawson, a Gadsden County native, represented Florida’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Gadsden, from 2017-2023.

While in Congress, Lawson helped secure $2.2 million in funding assistance from the State of Florida and a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to help develop the county’s Co-operative Extension Service facility in Quincy.

The building houses the local farmer’s market and provides a space for residents to host trade fairs and sell locally grown produce.

Commissioners will be joined at the building’s renaming by members of the Florida Senate and House of Representatives, members of the FAMU Community, members of the FSU community, Gadsden County elected officials, and business and community leaders.

The extension building will officially be renamed after Lawson on Wednesday, June 19, in Quincy @10 am.
