When it comes to which 911 dispatch service is the best in the nation - and the world - a global industry organization says the Tallahassee/Leon County Consolidated Dispatch Center is the team to beat.
The organization making that assessment is the Association of Professional Communications Operators. It's the oldest and largest entity that helps train, evaluate and advocate for emergency response providers all over the world. Now it's awarded "Center of the Year" honors to the Tallahassee/Leon County Consolidated Dispatch Center. The center's leader, David Odom, also brought home the "Director of the Year" prize. He says last year's response to the shooting at Florida State University was what really impressed the evaluators.
"The way that we responded so effectively in getting the first responders there and the way that we coordinated that response really set us apart from other communication centers around the country and around the world for that matter."
Odom says a community-wide event will be in the works to celebrate the most coveted accomplishment in the emergency communications world.
