Tallahassee City Commissioner Jack Porter wants the city to convene a task force to address pedestrian and cyclist safety. Her call comes as traffic injuries and fatalities have increased among pedestrians and cyclists.

So far this year in Leon County, there have been 2 fatalities and 3 serious injuries among pedestrians and bicyclists, according to the Florida Traffic Safety Dashboard. Last week a Florida State University student was killed in an intersection near campus; the driver left the scene and was later arrested.

Porter says the Capital Region Transportation Planning Agency has published a document called Safe Streets and Roads for All. She says it contains 52 critical local projects, many of which can be implemented quickly at a low cost to taxpayers, but that the report hasn’t been presented to the city commission.

“I think that a lot of good people have put in a lot of good work, and they’re waiting on the commission to give them the green light, the go-ahead, the funding and the full support to implement their recommendations," she said.

At a recent city commission meeting, Porter moved to explore joining Vision Zero, a network of cities committed to eliminating all traffic fatalities and investing in equitable mobility for all. It passed unanimously. Porter says she hopes commissioners will soon take up the transportation planning agency's recommendations.
