The city of Tallahassee is says living here is a good deal. In a budget workshop Wednesday, officials said compared to similar Florida cities, its costs rank among the lowest for things like fire protection and utilities. Margie Menzel reports.

Each year the city monitors how Tallahassee compares in essential costs to 11 other Florida cities. Those costs are property taxes, fire protection fees, utilities, solid waste service and business taxes. Robert Wigen, the city’s director of resource management, says the comparison for Fiscal Year 2023 shows Tallahassee has the lowest total cost for residents.

“So in addition to assessing the economic environment annually, we also survey and check on how we compare in our services, delivered quantitatively and qualitatively," he said. "We look at an annual average cost to residences…”

The city says its costs to both residents and businesses have generally been the lowest or second-lowest among those peer cities over the past several years.
