Tallahassee Commissioners are scheduled to meet Wednesday for a workshop on the city budget. The meeting comes after state lawmakers passed a plan that could have a significant impact on their bottom line.A measure to expand the homestead property tax exemption got legislative approval this session. 60-percent of voters will also need to greenlight to move in November in order for it to become law. But Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum says it if does, it could make budget talks in the city a little tougher.

“In a city like Tallahassee where 50 percent of the property is off the tax roll, it can have a deleterious effect to what we can do in this community with regard to what we can do in this community with regard to keeping just our most basic of operations going at scale,” Gillum says.

City Commissioners are preparing to start their budget talks for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. If passed, the property tax amendment would go into effect in January of 2019.
