Tallahassee City Manager Reese Goad says the local airport has just received a $1.77 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration.
"It's great news, because this is funding we need to design the new customs facility, which is the term we use, so we can get to an international designation that gets us to a foreign trade zone, that really unlocks our potential for trading internationally," he said, adding that the Capital City is already a player in this arena.
"Right now we have about a quarter-of-a-billion dollars in trade that comes through our airport in exports," Goad explained. "That's double what it was just five years ago. So we know there's great potential for the Tallahassee International Airport to have an international impact and to encourage manufacturing and growth in our entire area."
The new customs facility will be set up to process both passengers and cargo arriving on international flights.
