Higher education promises to be a central focus for incoming Senate President Joe Negron, and he just completed a four day tour of Florida’s university system.  Every school wants the same things, but the visit to two schools in Tallahassee shows they’re not starting from the same place.

Incoming Senate President Joe Negron is touring Florida’s university system.  He’s considering a tuition break to encourage on-time graduation.

A re-vote at Florida A&M University’s law school is on hold after university officials appealed a lower court ruling Monday. The fight is over the contested outcome of the student body president election. Justin Bruno won the race but his challenger appealed.  FAMU trustees met via conference call Tuesday to discuss the issue and others that have recently popped up at the school.

A Leon Circuit Judge has granted a request for an injunction over Florida A&M University’s contested student government presidential election. On the line is a voting spot on FAMU’s board which must soon decide whether to renew the employment contract of President Elmira Mangum.

 Update 3/24/16: A Leon County circuit judge has granted an injunction request made by Justin Bruno. The move means a new SGA Presidential election will apply only to FAMU's Law School in Orlando.

The House is debating a bill that would change Tallahassee’s downtown boundary for alcohol sales. 

Governor Rick Scott has filled three vacancies on Florida A&M University's governing board. Most of the departures come after a failed bid to unseat the school's president. Scott has started reshaping the makeup of the board, and some of the newest members are already familiar names.


Recently, a video from Tallahassee posted to a social media app used by college students, sparked a sexual assault investigation. But in the digital age tracking unseemly, and possibly illegal behavior through such apps is getting harder: and it forces law enforcement to walk a fine line between the right to privacy and policing.


Florida A&M University has cut ties with longtime general counsel Avery McKnight.  It’s the latest change in personnel made by school President Elmira Mangum.

Florida A&M University President Elmira Mangum is grasping for some way to change the subject in the wake of a failed ouster and a shake up on the board of trustees.  Mangum announced a criminal justice forum focused on efforts to ban the box.

Florida A&M University President Elmira Mangum has issued a response to her Board of Trustees. Mangum is accusing the board of micro-managing her and says the claims of financial irregularities during her tenure are "baseless".

Update: The Florida Board of Governors is checking up on several financial issues at Florida A&M University. Many parts of the BOG's request are similar to concerns being raised by FAMU's own trustees who are holding an emergency meeting Thursday.

Former Florida A&M University trustee William "Bill" Jennings, has died.  Jennings, an alumnus of FAMU, served on its board of trustees from 2001 to 2013.

The founding dean of Florida A&M University's business school has died. Sybil Mobley passed away Tuesday at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. She was 89 years old.

City Offers Sneak Peak Of FAMU Way Extension

The City of Tallahassee is preparing to re-open part of FAMU Way. Upon completion, the 1 mile roadway will run east to west, connecting South Monroe Street to Lake Bradford Road.

Florida’s public university governing board has approved a work plan for Florida A&M University but some board members are concerned the goals are still too low. At least one member is openly questioned whether FAMU’s goal to serve low-income students is obsolete.

Florida A&M University will honor its living, former presidents Thursday. The event is sold out, with more than 400 tickets sold. It’s a partnership between the Bethel Baptist Church Foundation and the FAMU Foundation.

Forbes Magazine Names FAMU a Top American College

Forbes magazine named Florida A & M University one of America’s Top Colleges for 2015, as well as one of the Best Colleges in the South. University officials say they’ve brought the school’s teaching methods into the 21st century.
