Amid a national worker shortage, state agencies are struggling to fill vacant positions and retain employees, including those who care for some of Florida’s most vulnerable citizens.

Unemployment continues to slowly improve in Florida as the state gets closer to regaining the number of jobs lost when the COVID-19 pandemic caused business closures and layoffs last year.

Federal unemployment compensation ended in Florida in late June. Those checks were on top of state unemployment checks. The theory was that less money in accounts would spur workers back into the labor market. That hasn’t happened.

Leon County and the City of Tallahassee are giving Amazon more than $2.5 million in incentives. In return, the company is promising 1,000 new jobs. Still, questions remain over whether those new jobs will result in overall job growth, or if Amazon will pull workers from other local industries. 

Diners are packing restaurants again and travelers are booking hotel rooms. Businesses are largely back open, but many don’t have enough employees to move their products or serve their customers.

A Leon County circuit judge Monday upheld a decision by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration to cut off federal unemployment money for tens of thousands of Floridians in June, rejecting arguments that the move violated state law.
