Death Row Inmate: New Law Means Reduced Sentence

Nick Evans

A man on death row is asking the Supreme Court for a new trial.

A jury convicted Mark Asay on two counts of murder in 1988, and sentenced him to death.  But three of those jurors voted to give him a life sentence instead.  Now with recent changes to Florida’s death row sentencing system, Asay is asking the Florida Supreme Court to revisit the case.  Under the new sentencing guidelines, ten votes are needed to sentence someone to death.  Asay’s lawyers are asking the Supreme Court to vacate the death sentence and reduce it to life in prison.

Nick Evans came to Tallahassee to pursue a masters in communications at Florida State University. He graduated in 2014, but not before picking up an internship at WFSU. While he worked on his degree Nick moved from intern, to part-timer, to full-time reporter. Before moving to Tallahassee, Nick lived in and around the San Francisco Bay Area for 15 years. He listens to far too many podcasts and is a die-hard 49ers football fan. When Nick’s not at work he likes to cook, play music and read.
