Capital Report: June 13, 2025

Florida’s House and Senate leadership has announced a final state budget version may be “on the desk” this evening, thus starting the 72-hour clock towards a final passage.

As the Florida legislature works to bring its budget proposal in for a landing, the funding for education issues is stabilizing. And as Margie Menzel reports, an education policy bill that died during the regular session is back on its feet.

President Donald Trump’s so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” could have wide-ranging impacts for more than four million Floridians with Medicaid coverage. The state gets about 22 billion Medicaid dollars a year from the federal government. WUSF’s Meghan Bowman spoke to Joan Alker [ALL-kur] – Executive Director for the Center for Children and Families at Georgetown University. Alker says if the bill passes, Florida's finances will be seriously strained.

Hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans live in Florida under Temporary Protected status, or TPS. Uncertainty is growing about their future. Miami sees the most asylum applications in the country. WLRN’s Tom Hudson met a Venezuelan couple who arrived in Miami 12 years ago seeking asylum, a common path to legal residency for many immigrants in Florida.

Despite a constitutional right to protest peacefully, some Florida officials are warning expected demonstrators against the Trump administration this weekend to avoid anything that might be considered unlawful.
