Capital Report: 03-26-2013

The battle over the fate of failing public schools is heating up. Supporters of a bill giving parents a greater say in that fate, are going on the offensive. A coalition of groups headed by the Jeb-Bush backed Foundation for Florida’s future, held an invite-only press event to talk about the highlights of the bill. But as Lynn Hatter reports, the state’s largest teacher’s union argues the only choice parents have in the bill is a charter school.

Bills in the Florida Legislature would limit the scope and power of the organization that regulates high athletes.  Supporters call these measures a victory for student rights.  But the regulatory group, the Florida High School Athletic Association, says the bills would pave the way for unfairness on the field and reduce the quality of tournaments as we hear from Jessica Palombo.

The 2014 gubernatorial race is shaping up, as Governor Rick Scott has released his first campaign ad this week. And, as Sascha Cordner reports, while Scott has at least one Democratic challenger, other potential candidates are lining up to say “Don’t count me out.”
