Capital Report: 03-12-2013

More families face foreclosure in Florida, than in almost any other state in the nation—that’s according to a group of lawmakers. Now Regan McCarthy reports they’re filing bills in an attempt to stem the problem.

The Florida Legislature is once again delving into the number of students legally allowed in public school classrooms.   The issue goes back more than a decade to when voters approved class size limits through a state constitutional amendment.  Lynn Hatter reports that amendment has caused heartburn and headaches for the state’s school districts ever since.

A number of bills aimed at limiting harm to children passed a Florida Senate committee today.  Jessica Palombo reports the proposals include one to keep sex offenders out of summer camps and a controversial change to the way the state investigates infant deaths.

There’s now a bipartisan effort in the Florida Legislature to grant judges more flexibility when sentencing prescription drug offenders.  The measure passed through its first House Committee Tuesday, but attracted much opposition from state prosecutors and law enforcement officers. Bill supporters say it would allow people addicted to prescription drugs to get necessary drug treatment. But, as Sascha Cordner reports, others say the bill will roll back the progress made in recent years to halt the illegal flow of prescription drugs.

Well, it’s been said that the Florida Capitol can be a pretty wild place.  Some have even referred to it as a “jungle”.  Today, the figurative became literal as the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission brought all kinds of wild things to the Capitol Courtyard.  Ryan Benk found the commission wants both citizens and lawmakers to appreciate the agency’s efforts to protect and conserve.
