  • Venvi Art Gallery is excited to announce "Layers", by artist Leah Macdonald. This exhibition will be on display from March 3rd to May 17th, with its art reception on May 1st from 5-8pm.

"Layers" showcases Macdonald’s encaustic pieces done on wood panels. These pieces explore accumulation, memory, and transformation through photography, printmaking, and encaustic. Each piece is built through a process of layered collaging, where images are added, obscured, reworked, and repositioned so that no single layer is fixed or final. With Macdonald’s use of photographs of women, horses, and flowers, these works hover between presence and erasure. The encaustic surface both preserves and conceals, which allows fragments to surface while others recede. By adding layers together rather than resolving them, "Layers" reflects the complexity of identity, strength, and vulnerability. The works in this exhibition have meaning that is formed not in a single image, but in the tension and dialogue between them.

Leah Macdonald obtained her MFA in Photography from the California College of Art. Throughout her career, she has been a commercial photographer, analog printer, and college professor. She later became the Education Curriculum Director at the Manayunk-Roxborough Art Center. In 2007, she was asked to do a live encaustic painting demonstration on the Martha Stewart show. Macdonald’s career in the arts is prolific, with exhibition work, handmade self-published books of her work, and more. She recently launched a new website titled “Lost Light Luv”, which features her analog photography. Her encaustic photos are represented by numerous galleries, including Inliquid Arts, Saatchi Art, Galerie BMG and Cerulean Art Gallery in Philadelphia. Macdonald’s experience in photography and mixed media have become a new artistic technique called “photogestic”. Macdonald also works with students in the Philadelphia school district.

"Layers" will be on display from March 3rd to May 17th. Its art reception will be on May 1st from 5-8pm. Venvi Art Gallery is located at 2901 E Park Ave Unit 2800 Tallahassee, FL 32301. To learn more about this exhibition and Leah Macdonald’s work, please visit www.venviartgallery.com.

  • Join us as we travel the back roads to discover the small towns of Old Thomas County. Go behind the scenes of historic buildings, churches, and homes. Sample the local cuisine during lunch. Discover what makes our area unique!

Our next road trip adventure takes us to Metcalfe, Georgia! This town was incorporated in October of 1889, just one year after the Thomasville-Monticello Railroad came to town. This area was the perfect spot for local farmers and agriculturalists to bring their goods, from timber to watermelons, to be shipped throughout the country. The downtown took shape around this time, and several beautiful homes were built to move the owners closer to their businesses.

Tours meet at the Thomasville History Center at 9:30am to load onto the bus. Separate drivers can meet the group at the first tour stop by 10am. The bus will arrive back at the History Center by 4pm.

Guests are asked to wear comfortable walking clothes and closed-toe shoes. Some ventures may involve wandering off the beaten path. Water will be available but it is recommended to bring a water bottle. Lunch and additional purchases made during the Road Trip are not included in the ticket price. Please let us know of any travel accomodations you may need in the comments or by emailing meme@thomasvillehistory.org.
