The Tallahassee Downtown Improvement Authority is thrilled to announce the return of the Downtown GetDowns in fall 2024. Beginning in the late 1990s, the Downtown GetDowns were a key part of the annual event calendar in downtown for over 20 years and attracted thousands of attendees from across the community.
The events take place on the Adams Street Commons at the corner of Adams Street and College Avenue from 6:00-10:00PM. The series is free to the public and will include live music from local bands Tom & The Cats and Two Foot Level, the Fun 4 Tally Kids Zone, performances by community dance groups, and numerous food and craft vendors. Downtown GetDown series brings together the best local food vendors, favorite local musicians, and activities for kids of all ages.
The Downtown GetDowns are made possible by the generous support of Tri-Eagle Sales, Social House Vodka, and the Adams Radio Group. Whether you have an interest in agriculture, are passionate about nutrition or simply love to write, we invite you to enter the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) Division of Food, Nutrition and Wellness’ (FNW) first-ever Florida Farm to School Essay Contest. The contest is open to Florida students in grades 9 – 12, including those in public, private and charter schools, as well as virtual and home-schooled students. This Farm to School Month, submit an original essay responding to one of our three topics – each designed to celebrate and reflect on the tremendous contributions of Florida farmers and the benefits of eating locally grown foods. We will choose three winners to receive up to $1,500 in college funding and meet Florida’s Agricultural Commissioner Wilton Simpson – plus additional prizes, outlined below. Join us on October 21 for the premiere of a new StoryWalk® installation at the Florida Historic Capitol Museum featuring the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra’s Bicentennial book T is for Tallahassee: The ABCs of our Musical City! Enjoy free craft activities, snacks, and special interactive experiences with TSO’s Mina Quartet and local artists. Guided readings will be held at 10:30 AM and 11:30 AM.

This activity is recommended for early readers and young arts enthusiasts aged 3 – 8, but the images created by the local artists can be enjoyed by all ages. After the launch, the StoryWalk® will be available as a free, self-guided activity through December 2024.

Fans will experience the scope and grandeur of this beloved film in a live symphonic concert experience.

The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting a Full Moon Lighthouse Event on Thursday, October 17, from 7:30-9:30 pm ET in Carrabelle, FL. Visitors can enjoy the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the glow of the sunset and rising Hunter’s Moon.

Visitors can enjoy an after-hours tour of the Keeper’s House Museum and see the exhibit of the lighthouse’s original, historic Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris, France. Guests can browse the unique nautical gifts and souvenirs in the gift shop. Visitors may also enjoy the glowing bonfire in the park (weather permitting). Bring a chair and enjoy the evening.

For those brave souls who are bold enough to venture to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast, evening tower climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals throughout the event. Climbers will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the bay. Evening climbs cost $10 and climb reservations are strongly encouraged due to limited availability. Climbers must be at least 44 inches tall and children under 12 (FREE) with ticketed adults. The Crooked River Lighthouse is excited to announce an extended Country “SUPER” Market on Saturday, October 5, from 9 am-3 pm ET at Crooked River Lighthouse Park, 1975 Hwy 98 W, Carrabelle, FL, at the foot of Carrabelle’s historic lighthouse. There will be something for everyone, from market-fresh goods to unique nautical souvenirs and gifts from the Keeper’s House Gift Shop.

The Country “SUPER” Market will feature local and regional vendors with a variety of gifts and goodies. Visitors can shop for fresh roasted coffee, delicious baked goods including breads, cakes and more, organic farm-fresh produce, plants, handcrafted balms and sprays, fresh eggs, regional art and photography, local crafts, custom bags, jewelry, decor items, grass-fed beef, wildflower jellies, homemade hot sauce and salsa, and more. Shoppers can also browse some unique nautical gifts inside the Keeper’s House Gift Shop. Carrabelle’s own A Train Stop food truck will be at this event as well with delicious food..

Author and historian Robert Jacob will be participating from 9 am-12 pm ET for a book signing and meet & greet. Robert has over 50 years experience in living history portrayals and is passionate about dispelling myths and inaccuracies found in historical records. He has written several books including A Pirate’s Life in the Golden Age of Piracy, Pirates of the Florida Coast: Truths, Legends, and Myths, and Blackbeard: The Truth Revealed.

While at the market, attendees can explore the museum and the historic 1894 Fresnel Lens exhibit. Museum and market admission is free, and donations are warmly accepted. For those seeking a breathtaking view of St. George Sound, the lighthouse tower climbs are available from 9 am to 5 pm ET for a cost of $6 for climbers 13 years or older and $3 for youth ages 5-12 years. All climbers must be 44 inches tall.

Country Markets are regularly held on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturdays of each month from 9 am-1 pm ET. New and returning vendors are welcome to join at any time for a $10 fee per market.

Venvi Art Gallery is delighted to showcase "Hidden Layers, Visible Boundaries", a group exhibition of works by artists Anne Stagg and Cheryl Eggleston. This exhibition will showcase each of their unique perspectives through the repetition of patterns and lines in their abstract works. "Hidden Layers, Visible Boundaries" will be on display from September 6th to October 13th, with its art reception on October 4th from 5-8pm.

"Hidden Layers, Visible Boundaries" showcases over 30 of Anne Stagg and Cheryl Eggleston’s abstract pieces. The “hidden layers” aspect of this exhibition represents how Stagg incorporates pattern and color in layers in her works. The layers in Stagg’s pieces represent how ideas interact, transform and reveal underlying structures in the complexities found in human interactions, societal systems and ideas over time. The “visible boundaries” aspect is found in the visual boundaries represented through patterns, hard edges and strong lines found in many of Eggleston’s works.

Anne Stagg is a Tallahassee- based artist and educator. She currently is an Assistant professor at Florida State University (FSU), where she serves as the co-director for the Foundations Program in their Department of Art. Cheryl Eggleston is an artist based in South Florida. Both Stagg and Eggleston have exhibited their works internationally. Eggleston also received several local awards for her works, even winning second place in the GAA 61st Annual Juried Show hosted by the Gadsden Museum of Art in Gadsden, Alabama. Stagg has received fellowship sand grants for her work as well.

In Stagg’s works, she investigates the complexities of human interactions, societal systems and how ideas evolve over time. Her incorporation of patterns and colors in her pieces showcase the process of how layers of ideas transform, interact and reveal underlying structures. While in Eggleston’s works, there are no rules. Her works are a representation of herself and serve as an outlet for her thoughts. According to Eggleston, “whether a piece of art is considered good or bad, art is the product of imperfect human creation. This is who I am, and these are my creations.”
