Venvi Art Gallery is delighted to showcase "Hidden Layers, Visible Boundaries", a group exhibition of works by artists Anne Stagg and Cheryl Eggleston. This exhibition will showcase each of their unique perspectives through the repetition of patterns and lines in their abstract works. "Hidden Layers, Visible Boundaries" will be on display from September 6th to October 13th, with its art reception on October 4th from 5-8pm.

"Hidden Layers, Visible Boundaries" showcases over 30 of Anne Stagg and Cheryl Eggleston's abstract pieces. The "hidden layers" aspect of this exhibition represents how Stagg incorporates pattern and color in layers in her works. The layers in Stagg's pieces represent how ideas interact, transform and reveal underlying structures in the complexities found in human interactions, societal systems and ideas over time. The "visible boundaries" aspect is found in the visual boundaries represented through patterns, hard edges and strong lines found in many of Eggleston's works.

Anne Stagg is a Tallahassee- based artist and educator. She currently is an Assistant professor at Florida State University (FSU), where she serves as the co-director for the Foundations Program in their Department of Art. Cheryl Eggleston is an artist based in South Florida. Both Stagg and Eggleston have exhibited their works internationally. Eggleston also received several local awards for her works, even winning second place in the GAA 61st Annual Juried Show hosted by the Gadsden Museum of Art in Gadsden, Alabama. Stagg has received fellowship sand grants for her work as well.

In Stagg's works, she investigates the complexities of human interactions, societal systems and how ideas evolve over time. Her incorporation of patterns and colors in her pieces showcase the process of how layers of ideas transform, interact and reveal underlying structures. While in Eggleston's works, there are no rules. Her works are a representation of herself and serve as an outlet for her thoughts. According to Eggleston, "whether a piece of art is considered good or bad, art is the product of imperfect human creation. This is who I am, and these are my creations."

WHAT: Hollywood Feed’s Annual “Paw it Forward” Donation Drive

DETAILS: Hollywood Feed will be holding its annual “Paw it Forward” Donation Drive to benefit local rescue partners throughout the holiday season. Customers are encouraged to support local pet rescues and shelters by donating an item (purchased from Hollywood Feed’s list of pet essentials for rescues) or by giving $5 or more to the campaign. In return, Hollywood Feed will be displaying personalized paper “paws” in store to publicly thank customers who participate by purchasing/donating in store and/or online.

Essential supplies commonly requested by pet rescues and shelters include bowls, Fromm Crunchy O’s, Old Mother Hubbard Dog Biscuits, Nutrisource Puppy Food, KONG Classics, Grandma Mae’s County Naturals Cat & Dry Food, Progility Calming Chews, Pure & Natural Shampoos, Weruva Pumpkin Patch Up, Hollywood Feed Fleece Bones, wire crates, collars and leashes and more.

In terms of donations, even a small amount can make a big difference to our furry friends:
• $5 provides a pet with nutritious food for one week
• $10 provides a pet with a chew toy for enrichment
• $15 provides a pet with a clean and comfortable kennel
• $25 provides a pet with intake vaccinations
• $50 provides a pet with spay/neuter surgery
• $100 provides a pet with life-saving medical care

Leon County will host the 27th Annual Volunteer Fire Truck Round-Up on Saturday, October 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tom Brown Park by the dog park near Lake Leon.

This FREE event highlights the service and dedication of Leon County’s volunteer firefighters by inviting the community to experience interactive touch-a-truck displays and meet the firefighters themselves. The event will also include fun, family-friendly activities, including face painting, bounce houses, giveaways and more!

At 11 a.m., we will announce the Jack Harron Volunteer of the Year for service above self. Chief Harron served 17 years as fire chief and was instrumental in the creation of the annual Volunteer Fire Truck Round-Up.

The Carrabelle History Museum is excited to present a special exhibit, “Shells & Shards”. This unique exhibit explores the rich prehistoric culture of Carrabelle, showcasing intricate Native American pottery shards and ancient shells that tell the stories of Carrabelle’s early cultural practices and daily life. This exhibit will be on display from Wednesday, October 2 through Saturday, October 27. The museum is open Wednesdays from 12 noon to 5 pm, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays 12 noon to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission; donations are gratefully accepted.

The exhibit showcases fascinating artifacts from Carrabelle’s first people, particularly the Apalachee tribes who lived along the shores of St. George Sound and local rivers over 2000 years ago. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of villages, middens, and burial grounds in Carrabelle, indicating the area was an important trade port due to its deep-water harbor and the nearby rivers.

Highlights from the “Shells & Shards” exhibit include artifacts from the Woodland period, around 3,000 years old, when Native people began establishing permanent settlements and producing pottery for storage. The exhibit features pottery made from local North Florida clay, which was flexible and strengthened with materials like sand or crushed shells. Visitors will also explore the processes used to create and fire these pots.

In addition to pottery, the exhibit features shells that were used as tools, jewelry, and decorative items. These shells, often uncovered after storms, date back to the time of the native peoples and provide valuable information about their prehistoric meals and resourcefulness. Visitors will discover how shells can be dated using growth bands, similar to tree rings, and will see examples of shells repurposed as tools or used in decoration.

The Carrabelle History Museum encourages visitors to take an active role in preserving Florida’s rich history. People who discover items of historical significance are asked to take a picture, leave the item in place, and report it to the Florida Public Archeology Network at 850-595-0500. Everyone can help protect and preserve our shared heritage for future generations.

This exhibit was made possible through the extensive research, design, and creative efforts of Skyler Frazier. Skyler graduated from Leon High School in 2023 and is currently pursuing a dual degree in Archeology and Art History from the University of Rochester. Try a few steps with us. Square dancing is a delightfully energetic activity set to great music, requiring lessons to learn the steps. You will be laughing and want to keep on dancing. You will walk many steps at each session, so wear comfortable clothes and shoes. (No crinolines or cowboy boots needed.) Contrary to our name, we do not twirl much, so you will not get dizzy. Please bring a partner, if you can, to get the most out of the event. Ages 12 and up.
