Capital Report: 02-27-2018

A number of public safety proposals have passed their first House committee. Like the Senate version bill, it does not include an assault weapons ban. Still, as Sascha Cordner reports, more people are starting to agree that while this isn’t the best bill, it’s not totally bad either.

A measure that would expand Florida’s rules on issuing threats is moving forward. Regan McCarthy reports officials are pointing to the many copycat threats made following the school shooting in Parkland as a reason for why the change is needed. 

The Florida Legislature is on track to make raising taxes more difficult. Shawn Mulcahy reports a measure proposing a boost in requirements for increasing taxes is on its way to the Senate floor.

The Florida Keys have been in an affordable housing crisis for years.  It’s a simple matter of limited supply and very high demand.  Things got even worse back in September when Hurricane Irma destroyed or caused major damage to thousands of homes, reducing the housing supply even more.  From member station WLRN in Miami, Nancy Klingener sat down with Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers to discuss what the county can do – if anything – to improve the situation.
