Capital Report: 03-20-2015

Sea levels are rising and so were tempers Friday as protesters descended on Governor Rick Scott’s office. Environmental and open government advocates were armed with a petition seeking an investigation and a public records request for documents. As Jim Ash reports, they hope to get to the bottom of allegations that Scott is ordering his agencies not to refer to climate change.

For more than twenty years, Palm Beach County has labored to improve Lake Worth Lagoon.  The county’s largest estuary, it stretches twenty miles from North Palm Beach to Boynton Beach.  The lagoon is also infamous for its polluted past.  In late January, the county hosted its third Lagoon Boat Tour to show how several projects are improving the water.  But, as Jessica Meszaros (meh-ZAH-ros) with member station WLRN in Miami reports, the county is hoping for Amendment One money to keep the restoration flowing along.

Continued uncertainty over federal health funding is causing budget pains in the Florida legislature. The House and Senate have a multi-billion dollar gap in their proposed spending plans for the upcoming fiscal year—and that’s largely due to disagreements over the biggest part of state spending: Medicaid. Lynn Hatter has the story.

The head of Florida’s child welfare agency is now on the path to getting confirmed by the full Senate, after initial approval from a Senate panel this week. Sascha Cordner reports.
