Lake Leon at Tom Brown Park.

A Grand Jury says the fatal shooting of a suspect by law enforcers at Tom Brown Park last May was justified – and brave.

Tallahassee police and Leon County deputies were arresting a drug trafficking suspect when investigators say they were ambushed by 25-year-old Asia Fitzgerald.

The Leon County Grand Jury report refers to that area of the park being "shrouded in darkness."

It says officers were arresting the drug suspect when one of them, using a flashlight, spotted Fitzgerald walking toward them with an AR-15 style rifle. She ignored their commands and began firing at them.

The report says nearby law enforcers rushed toward the sound of gunfire and calls for help. Fitzgerald was shot and later died.

The Grand Jury found that “Law enforcement was doing the work we ask of them.”
