TPD's Deputy Chief Jason Laursen released new details regarding the two suspects encountered at Tom Brown Park in a Friday morning news conference at the police headquarters.

Several law enforcement officers went to Tom Brown Park Thursday night looking for 35-year-old Durrell Lee, who fled from a traffic stop earlier that night. Lee was under investigation for drug trafficking.

When officers got to the park they say they were "ambushed" by 25-year-old Asia Fitzgerald, who was with Lee at the time.

Deputy Police Chief Jason Laursen says both Fitzgerald and Lee were well-known to officers. He described the shooting as quote: “harrowing.”

“From what I have seen on the body cam footage it was very harrowing for the officers, they were in fear definitely and it was a very scary situation," Laursen said during a Friday morning press conference.

The timeline remains unclear, but at some point Fitzgerald left and returned with a rifle and began firing at officers.

Officers shot back and Fitzgerald was hit. She later died.

Lee was arrested and is facing multiple felony drug and weapons charges.
