The Florida State University Police Department is investigating the school’s Delta Tau Delta fraternity amid hazing allegations.
The university doesn't say what FSU PD is investigating. The national office suspended the Delta Phi Chapter Friday, says student Affairs Vice President Amy Hect.
“The national organization of Delta Tau Delta on Friday suspended the Florida State University chapter of the fraternity pending the results of the organization’s investigation into allegations of hazing,” Hecht said in a statement to the Tallahassee Democrat. “FSU is also investigating and has mirrored the national organization’s suspension pending the completion of the investigation.”
The move comes months after the Florida legislature increased penalties for hazing following the death of Pi Kappa Phi pledge Andrew Coffee. He died in December 2017 at an off-campus FSU party after drinking a bottle of bourbon.
The new law makes hazing that results in serious bodily injury or death a third degree felony. It grants the first person to call 9-1-1 and offer assistance to the injured person immunity from prosecution. and makes people who organize hazing culpable even if the organizer didn't participate in the event.
The law also prohibits hazing of former members of fraternities or other organizations.
