Family Files Civil Lawsuit Over FSU Fraternity Pledge's Death

Andrew Coffey, 20, died Nov. 3rd, 2017 during an off-campus party while pledging the FSU Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity

The parents of a Florida State University fraternity pledge who died in November are suing the fraternity and members they say caused his death.

Twenty-year-old Andrew Coffey died in November following an off-campus party. Nine members of the fraternity he’d been pledging have been charged with hazing in his death.

The lawsuit says the fraternity failed to follow its own policies and its negligence contributed to the death.

Coffey died of alcohol poisoning, the lawsuit alleges, and it seeks to hold the Florida State University chapter of Pi Kappa Phi along with the entity that owns the fraternity house, and those charged in the case responsible.

Coffey’s parents are seeking damages for pain and suffering resulting from their son’s death, along with funeral and medical expenses. A June 11 trial date has been set for five of the nine students charged in the case.
