Alfred “Mac” McNeill will serve as the interim sheriff of Jefferson County. The appointment follows the death this week of Sheriff David Hobbs.

Governor Rick Scott appointed Mac McNeill to the post Thursday. The Marine Corps veteran most recently supervised the protection detail for three of the state’s governors: Scott, Charlie Crist and Jeb Bush. McNeill also served in the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and has twenty years of law enforcement experience.

Scott recognized the service of the late Sheriff David Hobbs in a written release Thursday, saying he  "dedicated his life to serving our country in the military and the families of Jefferson County as Sheriff." In the same written statement, Scott said McNeill has the experience to lead the agency.

"I am confident that Mac will serve and protect the families of Jefferson County exceptionally and with the utmost integrity," Scott said.

McNeill will lead the Jefferson County office through November 13, 2018. Former Sheriff David Hobbs was elected to serve through 2020, and a special election will likely follow McNeill’s interim appointment.
