For Arbor Day, Local Officials Invite Public To Help Plant Trees In Hermine-Damaged Area

Leon County

Florida’s Arbor Day may be Friday, but Tallahassee and Leon County officials are inviting the public to take part in the area’s own tree planting event Saturday.

The goal is to rebuild a portion of the urban forest at Lafayette Park. During Hurricane Hermine, that area experienced a lot of tree loss.

So, officials intend to select trees for replanting that have medium to high wind resistance. That includes native species like the red buckeye, black gum, and magnolia. There will also be persimmon, white tupelo, hickory, overcup oak, American beech, and redbud.

Participants are asked to bring shovels, rakes, work gloves as well as drinking water. The event starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Sue Herndon McCollum Community Center at 501 Ingleside Avenue.
