Scammers Target Bay County Residents With Letters From Fake Airline

Bay County law enforcement officials are warning that scammers are trying to steal people’s identities through the mail.

Some residents have gotten letters saying they’ve won airline tickets. The letters say they’re from US Airlines. Problem is, that’s not a real company. Bay County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Ruth Corley says the letters ask people to call to claim two round-trip tickets by giving their social security number and birth date.

"In reality what has just happened to them is identity theft. So, never give away personal information over the phone," she says.

Corley says anyone who thinks they’ve been victimized by scammers should report it to local law enforcement. She says although it’s hard to catch people who run mail scams, getting the word out can deter would-be scammers from targeting a community.
