Florida has reported 17 cases and three deaths this year from Vibrio vulnificus, which can be contracted by eating raw oysters or swimming in brackish water with an open wound.

Four candidates are competing for the Bay County School Board District 3 seat in a race shaped by debates over government transparency, district budget shortfalls and declining enrollment.

It is election season again and Bay County is in the thick of selecting new school board members. In District 2, two prominent educators are going against each other in a race that features heavy discussions about policy, and the path forward for student academic success.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a death warrant for a man convicted of murdering a Bay County woman in 1989. His execution is scheduled for December 9.

The deaths caused by Vibrio vulnificus bacterium were in Bay, Broward, Hillsborough, and St. Johns counties, according to the Florida Department of Health.
