The United Way of the Big Bend honored her work during its annual giving campaign kickoff

The company had recently lost a considerable amount of state and local funding support.

The organization presented a check of nearly $28,000 to School Board Member Alva Smith.

So far, the group has awarded funds to nonprofits whose work runs from Alzheimer’s to human trafficking to homelessness to re-entry for people who’ve been in prison
