A nonprofit that’s been struggling with funding cuts got a big boost on Saturday, Aug. 23. The Tallahassee branch of 100 Women Who Care presented a check for almost 28 thousand dollars to the Southern Shakespeare Company.
Most people know the Southern Shakespeare Company for its free annual Shakespeare in the Park Festival. But the company performs and teaches throughout the year, collaborating with the Leon County Schools. Bianca Montague, the company’s executive director, said the unexpected check from 100 Women Who Care will go a long way.
“I think anyone who’s in the non-profit realm knows that the last few years have been hard budget-wise. You’re looking at state cuts which lead to county cuts which lead to city cuts. And unfortunately, programs in the arts are left floundering because some of those funds are going to more wraparound care programs.”
The Tallahassee chapter of 100 Women Who Care was celebrating, too. With that donation to the Southern Shakespeare Company, the group officially broke the half-million-dollar mark in its giving to the local community.
