Leon County's Title One elementary schools have far fewer books in their libraries than the district average. A campaign to provide more books for those schools got a big boost over the weekend.
The charitable group 100 Women Who Care has raised more than $400,000 for various worthy causes since its founding in 2020. On Sunday, the group presented Leon School Board Member Alva Smith with a big check for nearly $28,000. Smith said that donation will mean a significant boost in the number of books available to the kids who attend the county's thirteen Title One schools.
"We wanted to increase that number, both with financial contributions so they can purchase what they need, and then also with like-new books at receptacles all around town. So with both of those methods, we'll be able to touch all of our Title One schools and increase the number of books."
Smith began the book drive when a district-wide survey showed the libraries in Title One elementary schools contained far fewer books that the district's other schools.
