Former Leon County High School Principal Rocky Hanna announced his campaign Thursday flanked by students, parents and teachers in Tallahassee’s Cascades Park.

Leon County School Superintendent Jackie Pons has another challenger for his seat.  Tallahassee City Commissioner Scott Maddox is in, and Thursday Rocky Hanna kicked off his race.  Hanna says he’s running to get politics out of the school system.

“I’ll be running on my own merit, with no party affiliation,” Hanna says.  “I have never run for political office, and I can assure you this is not simply a stepping stone to something bigger.”

Hanna served as Leon High School principal until 2012.  He’s served as a district administrator since.  Hanna filed for whistleblower protection last year after turning over documents related to the district’s construction contracts.  The disclosure led to an FBI investigation that remains ongoing.

While he worked on his degree Nick moved from intern, to part-timer, to full-time reporter. Before moving to Tallahassee, Nick lived in and around the San Francisco Bay Area for 15 years. He listens to far too many podcasts and is a die-hard 49ers football fan. When Nick’s not at work he likes to cook, play music and read.
