The Leon County School District is waiting on approval from the Department of Education to move forward with plan to construct a new high school.
Chief of Facilities and Construction, Jim Connell, says the condition some county schools and increased crowding are leading the efforts for a new high school.
“We’ve got ageing facilities. We have many portables, relocatable classrooms, throughout the district we’re trying to take out of service" Connell says. "So as we take out of service some of the older facilities, obviously we have less classroom seats.”
If approved by the Department of Education, the school will be located in the Southwood area of town and could take up to five years to complete. Under the plan, Rickards would become a middle school, serving grades 6 through 8.
