The race for Leon County Superintendent is heating up this week. Current superintendent Jackie Pons has announced his re-election bid, and one of his rivals, Rocky Hanna, has filed to run.
As Superintendent Jackie Pons announced his re-election bid at Richards High School, the place where he was a popular high school coach, Rocky Hanna was in the Supervisor of Election’s office, filing his campaign paperwork.
Hanna’s formal announcement is slated for later this week, but the former Leon High School Principal and now district administrator is officially in the race.
Hanna has filed for whistleblower protection for his role in distributing a notebook of documents alleging the district and Pons improperly awarded school construction projects. The district remains under an FBI investigation but separate inquiries have found no criminal wrongdoing.
Former Tallahassee Mayor and City Commissioner Scott Maddox is also in the race and is the clear money leader—having raised more than 90-thousand dollars. Also running is private investigator Michael Wynn.
