Capital Report: August 16, 2024

Former University of Florida president Ben Sasse tripled presidential office spending -- according to “The Independent Florida Alligator,” a student-run newspaper. The story is based on a side-by-side financial comparison with pervious UF President Kent Fuchs [FOX]. Fuchs (FOX) kept a staff of less than ten people. Sasse tripled that, making hires related to his previous job as a Nebraska U-S Senator. He also hired a consulting firm that he previously worked for. WUFT’s Matthew Cupelli spoke with the reporter who broke the story, Garrett Shanley [SHAN-lee].

TAG: That was Garrett Shanley [SHAN-lee] of the “The Independent Florida Alligator.” Shanley uncovered considerable spending by former UF President Ben Sasse compared to previous university leadership. Sasse left the presidency last month after less than two years. He said he needed to focus on his wife’s health -- and would stay on as a professor.

It’s stressful, and it’s NOT going away anytime soon, as WUFT’s Áine Pennello [Awn-yuh Puh-nell-lo] reports from Gainesville.
