Capital Report: January 11, 2024

Florida lawmakers are following through on a promise to address the myriad regulations on public schools. A major proposal slashing rules on everything from how teachers are certified, hired and paid, to rolling back some of the state’s standardized testing system, has cleared a major hurdle. But as Lynn Hatter reports, the House and Senate differ on how far they should go with deregulation.

The Florida legislature is tackling the issues of social media and its potentially harmful effects on minors. A House committee has advanced legislation that would ban most kids from having access to social media regardless of whether parents’ consent. Adrian Andrews has more.

Changes are coming to the proposed controversial bill set to roll back child labor protections in Florida. WFSU’s Tristan Wood reports that a senate companion was filled late last week, but that there are many differences between the two proposals that could significantly change the bill’s impact.

Advocates for LGBTQ Floridians are sounding the alarm about a thirty-page bill called, “An act relating to biological sex.” WMNF’s Seán Kinane (SHAWN kuh-NANN) has more on the proposed legislation.
