Capital Report: 01-09-2015

This week, Florida became the 36th state to allow same-sex marriages.  And Tuesday morning as a Governor and Attorney General that have long opposed the change celebrated their inauguration, Nick Evans reports just blocks away, same-sex couples were reciting their wedding vows.  

With same-sex couples getting hitched right across the street, Governor Rick Scott was sworn into office for the second time Tuesday. Lynn Hatter takes a look at what the governor is promising, and what’s changed from four years ago.

Amendment One dollars are piling up faster than organizers of the environmental protection measure could ever dream. So are ways the Legislature could direct a stream of cash now expected to top 750 million dollars in the first year alone, Jim Ash reports.

During their first week back, Florida lawmakers discussed some ways to reform the state’s prison system—currently plagued by allegations of inmate abuse by prison guards and cover ups. Sascha Cordner reports.

Florida remains one of the states that hasn’t created its own healthcare exchange as part of the federal Affordable Healthcare Act.  In the Sunshine State, Health-care-dot-gov is the place for Florida and thirty-six other states to shop for health insurance.  And by FAR, Florida is leading the others in enrollment with nearly double the sign-ups in Texas, which is second in the number of enrollees using the federal marketplace.  As Lottie Watts with member station WUSF in Tampa reports, one Floridian who bought a plan through the federal exchange is a St. Petersburg man.

Florida’s discussion on Energy is heating up in the run up to the legislative session. But Regan McCarthy reports some question whether the talk is just for show.
