Capital Report: 03-26-2014

A spending plan for the upcoming fiscal year is coming into view as both chambers of the Legislature finalize their respective budget proposals. Lynn Hatter reports the House Appropriations Committee signed off on that chamber’s $75 billion dollar spending proposal Wednesday.

The Florida Senate approved a slew of measures, teed up some others, and put several measures on hold today. As Sascha Cordner reports, they range from an inmate porn ban to bill stiffening the penalties for hit-and-run drivers.

Protective injunctions, also called “restraining orders”, are a common tool used to protect victims in domestic violence cases.  But, as Ryan Benk reports, some advocates and lawmakers think Florida’s protective laws have some serious gaps that need fixing.

Lawmakers are considering a plan to loosen rules for a place some Floridians are dying to get in. Regan McCarthy reports a House panel took up a plan this week to give religious cemeteries more space.

Now here’s Jessica Palombo with updates on a number of other bills moving at the Capitol today (Wednesday).

It seems nearly every corner of Florida has its own day at the Capitol during the legislative session.  One of the most eagerly anticipated, by organizers and lawmakers alike, is the one sponsored by the Florida Keys and Key West.  It usually turns the courtyard between the Old and New Capitol buildings into a rollicking approximation of Key West’s Duval Street.  But this time around, as Nick Evans reports, the happening was bedeviled by a North Florida wind that blew no good.
