Capital Report: 03-13-2013

The story broke in Jacksonville’s Florida Times-Union Wednesday morning.  Florida Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll was stepping down.  That resignation came amid a racketeering probe involving a group Carroll once had connections with.  Sascha Cordner takes a look at what brought Governor Rick Scott’s second-in-command to this point.

As Sascha Cordner just mentioned, Carroll has been connected with an organization involved in the Internet Café business in Florida.  Matthew Peddie with Florida Public Radio Station WMFE in Orlando has the latest on the legal probe into that business.

Not surprisingly, Florida’s Capitol is abuzz following the Carroll resignation and the investigation.  Now as Lynn Hatter reports, lawmakers are reacting to the news and what it may mean for the future of Florida politics and the state’s internet café industry.

After riding more than 300 miles from Tampa to Tallahassee a group of cyclists has made it to their destination. Regan McCarthy reports they’re hoping their 10-speed trek will encourage lawmakers to shift cancer funding into first gear.

Measures related to cyber bullying, school security, open school board meetings and the United States founding fathers all made it past the House K-12 Subcommittee today [on Wednesday]. Jessica Palombo reports, the cyber bullying bill would require principals to intervene when students threaten each other on the Internet.

Florida Senate President Don Gaetz has said he wants to see education become more relevant to workforce needs.  Now a bill clearing the Senate’s education committee would do just that.  Lynn Hatter reports the proposal lays out different ways students can fulfill their high school graduation requirements while also earning industry certifications along the way.
