In honor of the Chinese New Year, we have brought in dozens of traditional Chinese dragon carvings including some vintage sculptures, hand signed by the artist. The public can explore these unique pieces created by Chinese artisans, while enjoying live harp music, festive decorations, and even free fortune cookies.

Thornton Dial, Sr. was a self-taught artist whose assemblages, created from found materials, brought attention to sociopolitical issues including racism, homelessness, and war. Dial worked for decades before realizing that what he created would be considered “art,” and is now considered one of the creative geniuses of his time. This exhibition presents a selection of Dial’s assemblages from the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum Permanent Collection, including exciting new acquisitions.

The time is the latter 1930s as the country was beginning to pull out of the Depression; the place is Manhattan, New York; and the family are the Sycamores. Headed by Grandpa Vanderhof, they are a motley group–some blood-related, others who stopped by the house and just stayed. There is a freedom in this family; they welcome one and all and enjoy all the possibilities that life presents. This is a story about living life and not just getting through each day.

There are glorious fireworks being developed downstairs, ballet lessons taking place in the living room, left-wing propaganda being printed and distributed in home-made candy, pet snakes surprising guests, and play after play being written on a typewriter that was delivered to the house by mistake. As Grandpa says, “Why not do what you want to do? After all—you can’t take it with you!”

In the midst of this wildly unconventional family is a tender love story: the romance of Alice, the “normal” one of the Sycamores, and her fiancé, Tony Kirby, the son of her wealthy, proper boss. When Tony brings his parents to meet the Sycamores on the wrong night, things get really interesting. Will this lead to the end of the romance? Why are the fireworks exploding now? And who called the FBI?

Answers to these questions and, we trust, much laughter will be yours to take with you at the conclusion of You Can’t Take It With You.

Gabriel Fauré, Requiem in D minor, Op. 48
The Requiem will be performed in Latin in the version for chamber orchestra, organ, mixed chorus, and two soloists, soprano and baritone.

Join clay artist, Nancy Jefferson for fun with clay in the LeMoyne Ceramics Studios. All techniques of hand-building and wheel throwing will be explored. Small classes are designed to teach a combination of beginners and advanced students together which adds more depth to each class. Beginners can learn the wheel or how to create anything by hand-building. From functional to sculptural, the sky is the limit as to what you can create!
Nancy is a seasoned Master Potter with over 45 years of experience who loves to go outside the box. If there is something special you wish to make, Nancy will show you how! If you want to participate in civic life here in Tallahassee but aren’t interested in preparing a 3-minute speech for a commission meeting, we have a local tradition that’s just for you. On Wednesday, March 20th at 6 pm at the WFSU Studios, citizens will have an opportunity to gather with both Leon County and City of Tallahassee Commissioners for the 12th Annual Tallahassee Town Hall — our hometown’s neighborly answer to all the anger on hourly display in Washington, D.C.

Moderated by WFSU Public Media’s Tom Flanigan, the event program pairs commissioners from both the City of Tallahassee and Leon County for a cross-governmental discussion about where Tallahassee is as a community, where we’re going, and what challenges we face in getting there. Scheduled to join the conversation from Leon County are Commissioners Rick Minor, Carolyn Cummings, Nick Maddox, Brian Welch, and David O’Keefe; and from the City of Tallahassee are Mayor John Dailey and Commissioners Curtis Richardson and Jack Porter.

The Town Hall program is a continuation of an ongoing series of unique locally-focused forums sponsored by The Village Square, a nonprofit devoted to bridging divides through discussion and spirited disagreement. The program is offered in partnership with the Tallahassee Democrat, WFSU Public Media, and Leadership Tallahassee, a program of the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce.

The Tallahassee Town Hall will have a live in-studio audience and will also be streamed live on Zoom from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20th.
