Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit in the month of January. The focus of the exhibit will be on the Battle of Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge from the 4th Infantry Division perspective. This exhibit will be on display until Saturday, January 27. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission.

The longest continuous battle ever fought by American forces lasted from September 19 to December 16, 1944 over control of the Hürtgen Forest, essential to the German plans for their upcoming Ardennes Offensive (which would be known to the Allies as the “Battle of the Bulge”). This small patch of land, 54 square miles located three miles east of the Germany / Belgium Border, would end up being extremely costly to the Allies despite a five to one advantage. This battle was somewhat forgotten because of the more famous Battle of the Bulge but it was a bloody and memorable experience for those that fought there.

Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum will present these two campaigns from the perspective of the 4th Infantry Division, also known as the Ivy Division, which received their amphibious training at Camp Gordon Johnston and landed on D Day at Utah Beach. The Museum has received both financial and historical assistance from the National 4th Infantry Division Association and Division Past President and Historian Bob Babcock. Photos and personal memoirs of soldiers who participated in these two battles will be featured.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Jacque Bonéy – Owner & Founder of Allegiance Canine.

Jacque Bonéy, a Memphis, TN native, attributes his dog training foundation to shadowing his father who trained in the Mid-South for more than 40 years. He has himself accumulated over 24 years of all-breed dog training pulling from his foundations to combine older, tried-and-true methods with modern, simple approaches that can be understood and easily replicated.

After graduation in 2007 from The University of Tennessee, Chattanooga with a degree in Entrepreneurship, he founded his company, Barking Pals Consulting, Inc. DBA Allegiance Canine. Allegiance Canine has a 16-year track record of applying simplistic, modern, balanced, and effective approaches to dog training for clients from all walks of life, with varied goals. Services offered by Allegiance Canine include basic and advanced obedience training, working dog training, including sport, personal protection, and guard dog components, boarding, and a fitness-inspired dog daycare. In 2021, Jacque became one of the first individuals to successfully certify as a decoy for K9 Street League, the nation’s first professional working dog sport.

Jacque also serves as a board member and the service dog trainer for The Paul Oliver Foundation, a nonprofit with the mission of providing service dogs for veterans with PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury.

Calling all camellia lovers! The Pebble Hill Camellia Workshop with Wiregrass Camellia Society is a fun and informative event for anyone interested in learning more about growing, propagating, and preserving camellias, one of the South's most beautiful blooming shrubs. Bring your camellia blossoms and have them identified by experts and learn how to preserve your blooms in wax. Camellia plants will be for sale. In honor of Black History Month, Pebble Hill Plantation Curator, Lori Curtis, will present a tour through the Workers’ Cemetery.
The Workers’ Cemetery or “Staff” Cemetery is the resting place for many individuals and families who lived and worked at Pebble Hill for generations.
In 2013, Pebble Hill reached out to Thomas University in Thomasville, GA to document the site and to map the graves using GIS and GPS technology. That project identified 94 named graves and about 100 marked graves without names. The oldest marked and named grave dates to 1896. This project was updated in 2021 again with the help of Thomas University’s GAPP (Geospatial Analysis Planning & Preservation) Center.
The tour and presentation will include information regarding the documentation of the site and will highlight a few individuals who are distinguished in Pebble Hill’s history under the ownership of the Hanna family from 1896-1978.

The TCC Fine Art Gallery will be host an opening reception for "Florida Landscapes" by John Gleason on Thursday, January 11, from 5 until 7:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. The show will run through February 15.

“Florida Landscapes” features oil and acrylic paintings that boast landscapes from the Red Hills region to Florida’s forgotten coast. This exhibition depicts life in our local slice of the south — a timeless yet ever-evolving region. During the opening reception, Gleason will use his love of cooking to create Florida-inspired flavors to accompany the art pieces featured in the exhibit.

Join Apalachee Audubon as we learn from Jody Walthall how to convert a traditional landscape to one that has ecological function, using primarily native plants. Maintenance considerations will also be discussed.

Jody Walthall co-founded Native Nurseries in Tallahassee in 1980. He and his wife, Donna Legare, combined their passions for native plants, nature study, planting for wildlife and organic gardening to model their store after a nature center rather than a traditional garden center.

The Leon County Public Library system is excited to present an exhibit from one of our very own librarians, Deirdre Baldwin. Her collection of Barbies and Barbie Chelsea dolls were sold in different decades from the past 30 years and are accompanied by accessories including bags, brushes, and clothing. Join clay artist, Nancy Jefferson for fun with clay in the LeMoyne Arts Studios. All techniques of hand-building and wheel throwing will be explored. Small classes are designed to teach a combination of beginners and advanced students together which adds more depth to each class. Beginners can learn the wheel or how to create anything by hand-building. From functional to sculptural, the sky is the limit as to what you can create! Nancy is a seasoned Master Potter with over 45 years of experience who loves to go outside the box. If there is something special you wish to make, Nancy will show you how!
