Present Tense is an exhibition that ignites critical conversations on contemporary landscape art. This series centers upon the large-scale landscape painting, 15 Canvas Study of the Grand Canyon,1998, by Pop painter, David Hockney, on loan from Art Bridges. This work will be compared and contrasted with landscape works by Florida artists ranging from highly accomplished and celebrated painters Dean Mitchell and Mark Messersmith, to mid-career artists Chris Rivera and Sam McCoy.

Part one of Present Tense pairs the monumental painting, 15 Canvas Study of the Grand Canyon by beloved Pop painter David Hockney, on loan from Art Bridges, with nationally renowned artist Dean Mitchell’s series, American West.

The Tallahassee Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, in partnership with the Tallahassee Bach Parley, will present organist Timothy Olsen (University of North Carolina School of the Arts) in recital on Sunday, February 4th at 3:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 110 N. Adams St. in downtown Tallahassee. Dr. Olsen will perform works by Dieterich Buxtehude, Jan Sweelinck, Guy Bovet, Paul Hindemith, Ethel Smyth, Johannes Brahms, and J. S. Bach.

The Baroque Taylor and Boody organ at First Presbyterian is the ideal instrument for this recital. A post-concert reception will be held in the church hall. This concert is free and open to the public; all are welcome to attend.

Capital Area Healthy Start Coalition is hosting Glowing While Growing. Glowing While Growing is being held on January 27th in celebration of Maternal Health Awareness Day.

This free family-friendly event aims to bring together a diverse array of affordable maternal child health resources in Leon and Wakulla Counties, including CareerSource, Second Harvest, Pulsewrx, Bond Community Health Center, Brehon House Family Services, and Neighborhood Medical Center.

All are invited to attend this event filled with music, prizes, phone and tablet giveaways, healthy snacks, and resources to support families. There is no cost to attend.

Come enjoy an exciting day trip on May 7, 2024. Explore historic fashions, modern art, and gardens at the Cummer Museum, lunch at Iguana on Park on the riverfront, and experimental work at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Thornton Dial, Sr. was a self-taught artist whose assemblages, created from found materials, brought attention to sociopolitical issues including racial oppression, homelessness, and war. Dial worked for decades before realizing that what he created would be considered “art,” and is now considered one of the creative geniuses of his time. This exhibition presents a selection of Dial’s assemblages from the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum Permanent Collection.

Sam McCoy and Christopher Rivera have created a series of beautiful plein-air paintings that showcase the stunning landscapes of the South. They aim to inspire viewers to contemplate their connection with nature.
