Musically Up Close with Mary Matthews

Join flutist Mary Matthews for an evening of musical storytelling as she presents Flutelore.

Each work for solo flute, flute and electronics, or flute and piano is inspired by fairytale, folklore, and mythology. From the meditative to the adventurous, the program will include low flutes, flute beatboxing, electroacoustic works and more.
A dynamic and versatile performer, Mary Matthews is flute professor at Florida State University’s College of Music. She enjoys an active career as an international soloist, chamber musician, orchestral flutist, session musician, author, and pedagogue, and she has performed on four continents in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Severance Hall, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Fundação Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina, Festival Goethe Institut Música Nueva, and Cité Internationale des Arts.
An active studio musician and recording artist, Mary can be heard on soundtracks for film, TV, and video games on Netflix, HBO, and Disney. Co-author of the Beatboxing & Beyond method books, she is known for her command of extended techniques and adventurous programming.

The stage is set for an unforgettable stellar evening among the galaxies, stars, nebulas, and planets.

Market Days is recognized in Sunshine Artists Top 200 Events. Market Days is as essential today for the Tallahassee Museum as it was in 1965. Funds from Market Days benefit the Museum in innumerable ways. From educational programs for all ages to the care of our living wildlife collection and historic buildings, Market Days supports the Museum helping to provide the many services we deliver to our audiences throughout the region. Market Days is a volunteer run event. Market Days is a rain or shine event.

Venvi Art Gallery is delighted to showcase "Canopy Oaks, Embroiderers' Guild of America (EGA): Original Art and Fine Craft", a group exhibition of works by members of the organization Embroiderers' Guild of America. Varying types of needlework incorporating various designs and techniques will be featured in this exhibition. "Canopy Oaks, Embroiderers' Guild of America (EGA): Original Art and Fine Craft" will be on display from February 7th to March 16th, with its opening reception on February 7th from 5-8pm.

"Canopy Oaks, Embroiderers' Guild of America (EGA): Original Art and Fine Craft" showcases over 30 embroidery and needlework pieces by numerous members of the organization. Each piece is handcrafted and has intricate detail. Canopy Oaks, Embroiderers' Guild of America (EGA): Original Art and Fine Craft intends to showcase and educate anyone who views the pieces about the art and craft of embroidery, alongside celebrating its heritage and use in the community. According to Pam Doffek, a chapter member, EGA is "deeply dedicated to the study, preservation, and promotion of needle arts... Like any other artwork, it needs to be shown and shared, eliciting all the feelings and emotions of any art, 2-D, or 3-D."

EGA is a nonprofit organization that was formed in 1958 as a branch to the organization Embroiderers' Guild of London. It withdrew and became its own organization in 1970. EGA's mission is to inspire passion for needlework and other similar arts via cooperating and sharing ideas with like-minded individuals by promoting a high standard of embroidery techniques and designs. Each chapter is dedicated to using embroidery to benefit their communities. EGA holds a juried exhibit called Through the Needle's Eye annually in its headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky. Members of EGA are able to submit their own works to be displayed in this showcase.

2025 celebrates 125 years of Audubon in Florida. Formed to bring wading birds back from the brink of extinction, Audubon has been working for more than a century to protect birds because we know that the things birds rely on—healthy habitats, clean air, abundant fresh water, resilient coastlines—are the same things that people and other wildlife need to thrive. Birds are symbols and sentinels to measure our success, and they inspire us to work collaboratively and expansively throughout the hemisphere. In simplest terms, “what’s good for birds is good for the Earth.”
